The nurse, acting since the first transplantation in Brazil is increasingly seeking knowledge in the management and assistance in the development of a technical active and of major importance role in the process of organ donation and retrieving. Purpose: To make a literature review on the performance of nurses in the process of organ donation and retrieving. Method: It was analyzed articles published between 2000 and 2010 on the following databases: LILACS, SciELO, Google academic, Ministry of Health and the Bra- zilian Association of Organ Transplantation. Results: From 17 articles reviewed, four have been published between 2000 and 2005 and 13 between 2006 and 2010. These articles were published in eight different periodicals. Conclusion: From this study, it can be concluded that Nursing has been transforming its role over the past 40 years in activities driven to the organ transplantation in Bra- zil, supported by the Federal Nursing Council and the Resolution No. 292/2004, granting them exclusive activities such as to “plan, implement, coordinate, supervise and evaluate” in the whole organ donation and retrieving process. Although the role of the Nurse is being expanded in this area, there is still scarce scientific articles published addressing this theme, suggesting the future research and disclosure of studies focusing the importance of the nurse’s performance in the process of organ donation and retrieving.
