Abstract

The In-Hospital Commission of organ and tissue donation for transplants of the Uberlândia Clinical Hospital always seeks to improve and increase the amount of multi-organ donors. This study is necessary to get better knowledge on the profile of eligible organ and tissues donors in brain death. Purpose: To identify the donation rates and types of organ and tissue donations; the profile of eligible donors: age, gender, marital status, cause of death, whether the donation was performed or not, which organs and tissues were donated; and the reasons for the non-donation in patients diagnosed with brain death, if there was refusal or contraindication to the donation. Method: This is a descriptive, retrospective, quantitative approach performed at Hospital de Clinicas, Uberlândia Federal University. The data collection was based on a review of medical records of all patients diagnosed with brain death in that institution from October of 2013 to May of 2015. Results: We completed and reported 50 cases of individuals with brain death. In this sampling, male gender prevailed with 60%; the predominant age group was between 40 and 60 years; as marital status, singles prevailed with 54%; among the causes of death, stroke and TBI prevailed with 34% each; as to the feasibility, 35 protocols were feasible cases to the donation, and 15 cases were contraindicated to the donation. Among the contraindications, sepsis prevailed with 33% as the main cause; from the feasible cases for donation (35), 60% became multiple organ donors; among donors hired, it prevailed the kidney removal with 43%. Conclusion: Permanent education is much needed throughout the whole process both aiming the internal training of members CIHDOTT, health professionals involved in the whole process of the brain death diagnosis and for the maintenance of the potential donors. Several issues have been identified during this study, and such training process would be of great value to start solving them.
